What makes a space extraordinary, memorable, and refined? An interior is a manifestation of the spirit of its age — its cultural values, prevailing technologies, social realities, tastes, and aspirations. Its defining qualities are therefore constantly shifting. Every era is shaped by different values, expressed by those who create interiors in pursuit of the idealized spaces of their time. There have been eras when interiors served as the self-expression of their makers, and others when they expressed the political values of their time.
Today, the finest interiors are those that offer a full expression — a biography — of the people who live in them. The three most essential elements of a successful interior today are a curated selection of objects, a strong presence of craftsmanship, and a sense of storytelling. Interior designers have taken on the dual role of curator and poet, striving to create spaces that are meaningful, interesting, personal, and inspiring. These are the qualities that infuse interiors with soul and contemporary identity, giving people a genuine sense of connection.
In the new series “Magical Spaces of the Past and Present,” design historian and connoisseur Daniella Ohad will host eight conversations with interior designers, historians, and scholars — exploring identity across past and present, and revealing what makes spaces truly quintessential and powerful.
