Richard Filipowski
A Chance to own a Museum-Quality Piece of Design
“Richard Filipowski was one of the most gifted polymaths in the annals of American modernism,” wrote Larry Weinberg, one of the most respected design dealers in New York.” If he had a low profile in the world of modernist design, those who knew Filip, as he was called by friends, suggest it was partly by inclination. His deepest passion was for his art, which he explored in abstract paintings and sculpture that reflected what he termed the ‘art of the psyche.’ Such work turned him inward, toward self-exploration, and away from worldly judgment and the quest for rewards.”
Now that, several prototype of Filipowski’s brilliant furniture are offered in the upcoming design sale at Wright on December 9th, it is possible to add a great historical piece by the American artist to your collection. Those prototypes come directy fron the Estate of Filipowski.
Who was Filipowski? An important figure of the New Bauhaus and an instrumetal fiture in American modernism. When he was a young student, he discovered a MoMA exhibition catalogue on the Bauhaus school, which led him to pursue a formal arts education; upon completing his studies, he sought László Moholy-Nagy as a mentor. He would go on to teach with the New Bauhaus as a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, and later served as an educator at Chicago’s Institute of Design, the Harvard School of Design, and MIT, where he developed an influential design theory course.
